While water heats, an oven preheats, or a delivery update is pending, your body may still be holding the shape of the chair. The pause does not need to become a workout. It can simply be a gentle chance to stand up.

A short pause is not a replacement for a full routine

The CDC notes that sitting less and doing some physical activity can be worthwhile, while regular activity still builds across a week. Treat these minutes as an opportunity to get up from sitting, not as a way to compensate for a meal.

A seven-minute version you can shorten anytime

  1. Slowly march in place or lift your knees gently for two minutes;
  2. Hold a stable counter and do heel raises for one minute;
  3. Circle your shoulders forward and back;
  4. Move your ankles gently, then take a few easy breaths.

Turn down the heat or step away from it first, and use a dry, non-slip area. Do not move while carrying hot water, chopping, or working at the stove. Pain, dizziness, or unsteadiness are reasons to stop. Two minutes counts as a perfectly good start today.
